Just a day after Guyanese officials were informed about a sunken vessel in their offshore waters, the investigation into the boat’s origins and the fate of its crew is ongoing. A capsized fishing vessel was located on Tuesday in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately two miles from the mouth of the Berbice River.
The discovery was prompted by an anonymous report made to the DeEdward Fishing Co-Op, which stated that an abandoned boat had been found. Following the tip, investigative teams, including members of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, proceeded to the site to survey the boat.
The teams plan to return to the area tomorrow during low tide to get a clearer view of the vessel, hoping to identify its registration number. In the meantime, fishing ports at DeEdward and Rosignol in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), as well as those at Fyrish and Port Mourant in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), which are near the sunken boat’s location, have confirmed that all boats registered to those ports are accounted for.
Additionally, there have been no recent reports of missing boats or crew members from Guyana. Some local fishermen speculate that the boat might originate from another country and inadvertently drifted into Guyana’s territorial waters.
