WEST Indies Fast Bowler Shamar Joseph Receives Prestigious Awards
Shamar Joseph, the West Indies fast bowler, has expressed heartfelt gratitude after being honored with the Best Test Bowling Performance and Test Debutant of the Year awards at the 2024 ESPNcricinfo Awards. The 25-year-old made headlines in January 2024 when he delivered an incredible performance, taking 7 wickets for 68 runs in the second Test in Brisbane, leading the West Indies to a remarkable eight-run victory—marking the team’s first Test win in Australia in 27 years.
In the year 2024, Joseph achieved a remarkable feat, capturing 29 wickets in just eight Tests, which included three five-wicket hauls. He maintained an impressive average of 26.76 and an economy rate of 4.16. Upon receiving the news of his awards on Thursday, Joseph took to social media to share his humble reaction.
“Thank you, ESPNcricinfo; this is a shock and an honor,” he stated. “Last year, I was focused on finding ways to support my family. This year, I want to teach my two boys that the journey of life is about building new ambitions and never settling for less.”
Joseph acknowledged the support he has received from West Indies cricket legends and his coaches, attributing his success to their guidance. Reflecting on his performance in Australia, he described it as a “special time” and expressed his desire to take more wickets when Australia visits the Caribbean in July for a three-Test series.
“That month in Australia was unforgettable for our team, and my biggest wish for 2025 is to return and take even more wickets,” he said. “We have a series against Australia in the Caribbean this July, and I’m determined to perform and prove that I can entertain the fans when I go back to Australia. I receive messages from Aussie fans every day.”
Joseph also expressed his gratitude toward the fans in Adelaide and Brisbane, who supported him despite him not being an Australian. “I will always be thankful to those fans who cheered me on. I hope to visit Adelaide or Queensland someday,” he added.
He expressed immense pride in being recognized alongside some of the world’s top cricketers. “GOD FIRST, I represent Guyana, the West Indies, and Lucknow Super Giants.
