Weather Woes: Blades’ Strong Start Cut Short at CWI First Class Championship

    Published on

Persistent rain disrupted the third round of the day/night CWI Regional First-Class match between the Guyana Harpy Eagles (GHE) and the West Indies Cricket Academy at Providence Stadium last night. When play was called off, Guyana found themselves at 73-3, with Jediah Blades claiming all three wickets for just 15 runs. Before the rain halted the game, Guyana lost Kevlon Anderson, who scored 22 runs, putting them at 87-4. Kemol Savory (17) and Kevin Sinclair (4) remained not out on a day marred by rain.

Originally slated to start at 13:00 hours, the opening session was completely washed out, and play did not commence until 15:50 hours. Guyana, who made the decision to bat after winning the toss in gloomy conditions, left out Richie Looknauth and Junior Sinclair for this match. Test left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie made his return after missing the first two matches, while 20-year-old Thaddeus Lovell debuted as a fast bowler.

Blades struck early blows against the defending champions, leaving them reeling at 37-3 within the first hour. He first dismissed Matthew Nandu, who fell for just one run, followed by the dismissal of skipper Tevin Imlach (4) lbw. Blades then sent Raymond Perez back to the pavilion for 29 runs, leaving the home side in a precarious position.

Despite the adverse weather, Anderson and Savory aimed to stabilize the innings, having previously shared a 185-run partnership for the fourth wicket against Barbados. Anderson played some exquisite cover drives, while Savory scored with a cut shot off Johann Layne to bring the score past 50. The pair looked comfortable at the crease until rain interrupted play at 17:35 hours, with the score at 71-3.

At that point, Anderson had made 18 runs off 22 balls, hitting four boundaries, while Savory had contributed 17 runs from 27 balls, including three fours. Their partnership was worth 37 runs. After a lengthy delay, play resumed at 20:00 hours, but shortly after, Anderson was dismissed lbw by Johann Layne, leaving Guyana at 76-4. Sinclair and Savory were batting when the rain ultimately ended the day’s play just before the rescheduled conclusion at 21:00 hours.

Currently, Guyana sits in second place, trailing the Leewards by 0.2 points with a total of 45.4 following victories against Barbados and Jamaica. Play is anticipated to resume at 12:30 hours today, pending weather conditions.
