Marlon Jones, a 46-year-old resident of Lot 2 Queenstown, Essequibo Coast, has been fined and disqualified from driving for a year after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on March 26, 2025, along the Aberdeen Public Road in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Jones appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he was charged under Section 39(A)(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, as amended by the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Amendment Act 17/2022. He admitted to operating a vehicle while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
The court imposed a fine of $200,000 on Jones, with a default penalty of three months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay. In addition to the fine, his driver’s licence has been suspended for 12 months, prohibiting him from obtaining a new licence during this period.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to combat drunk driving and enforce stricter penalties to ensure road safety across Guyana. With tougher measures in place, drivers are reminded of the serious consequences of violating traffic laws and endangering lives.
