Public Works Minister Juan Edghill has called on the contractor for the Linden to Mabura Hill Road project to expedite construction efforts, expressing dissatisfaction with the current pace of work on the critical infrastructure project. The US$190 million initiative, being executed by Brazilian firm Construtora Queiroz Galvão S.A., is currently 43% complete and faces challenges in meeting its revised October 2025 deadline.
During a recent update, Minister Edghill revealed that the contractor has been instructed to increase its workforce and resources to fast-track progress. The road, which spans 121 kilometers and is co-financed by the Caribbean Development Bank, the United Kingdom, and the Government of Guyana, is a vital link between Linden and Lethem. It aims to improve connectivity for thousands of commuters and businesses transporting goods between coastal and inland regions.
Edghill emphasized that delays are unacceptable given the significance of the project to Guyana’s economic development. He noted that the government expects contractors to adhere strictly to timelines and contractual obligations, particularly for projects of this magnitude.
The Linden to Mabura Hill Road will feature a 7.2-meter-wide carriageway, pedestrian and cycle lanes, bus stops with accessibility features, and upgraded bridges and culverts. Once completed, it will significantly enhance transportation efficiency while reducing risks associated with the deteriorated condition of the current road.
Despite setbacks caused by procurement challenges and adverse weather conditions, Edghill remains optimistic about achieving substantial progress in the coming months. The government is closely monitoring the project to ensure accountability and timely delivery.
This roadway is part of a broader infrastructure agenda aimed at transforming Guyana’s transportation network and fostering regional trade. With heightened pressure from the government, all eyes are now on the contractor to deliver on its commitments and meet expectations for this transformative project.
