A tragic fire at a residence along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway has claimed the lives of a young couple, 34-year-old Kevin Cadogan and his 20-year-old girlfriend, Mezona Ronaldo, under circumstances that have left their families and the wider community searching for answers.
The incident occurred just after midnight on Thursday at Moblissa, where both Cadogan and Ronaldo suffered severe burns. According to initial reports provided to police, Cadogan’s mother, Patricia Williams, was awakened by cries for help from her son. She told investigators that upon rushing to the scene, she found both Cadogan and Ronaldo with burns on their bodies. The couple reportedly told her that Mezona was cooking in the kitchen when a gas bottle caught fire, and Cadogan was burned while trying to extinguish the flames.
Williams immediately transported the injured couple to Mackenzie Hospital, from where they were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment. Despite medical efforts, Ronaldo succumbed to her injuries first, followed by Cadogan, who died in the Intensive Care Unit early Saturday morning.
However, the circumstances surrounding the fire have been hotly disputed by Ronaldo’s family. Mezona’s father, Foster Ronaldo, alleged that his daughter was a victim of ongoing abuse during her year-long relationship with Cadogan. He claimed that Mezona had recently confided in him about her plans to leave Cadogan and had asked for help building a new house so she could move out. Foster also questioned the account of a gas bottle explosion, noting that only the chair where Mezona was sitting was burned, while the rest of the house remained untouched—a detail he believes contradicts the explanation of a kitchen fire. He further stated that his daughter could not speak after the incident, disputing claims that she had confirmed the gas bottle story.
The police have launched a full investigation into the incident, taking into account the conflicting accounts and the history of alleged abuse. The deaths have reignited concerns about domestic violence and the vulnerability of young women in abusive relationships, as well as the importance of thorough investigations in cases where the cause of fatal fires is disputed.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of two young lives and awaits further clarity on the tragic events that unfolded at Moblissa.
