Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has firmly reiterated that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government upholds the principle of separation of powers and should not be held responsible for any operational missteps made by the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Addressing recent criticisms and public concerns regarding police actions, Jagdeo emphasized that the government’s role is to provide policy direction and resources, but not to interfere in the day-to-day operations or investigations managed by law enforcement agencies. “We respect the independence of the police force and the separation of powers that is fundamental to our democracy,” Jagdeo stated during a press briefing.
He pointed out that the GPF, like all constitutional bodies, is required to operate without political interference, and any errors or lapses in their work must be addressed through established oversight mechanisms. “The PPP/C government cannot and will not micromanage the police. If there are missteps, there are systems in place for accountability and correction,” he added.
Jagdeo also called for patience and due process as investigations into recent police conduct continue, assuring the public that transparency and justice remain top priorities for the administration. He encouraged citizens to use appropriate channels to report grievances and reminded all stakeholders of the importance of maintaining the integrity of national institutions.
The Vice President’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of the GPF’s actions and renewed debate about the boundaries between government authority and law enforcement autonomy. As the conversation continues, the PPP/C government maintains its stance on respecting institutional independence while supporting ongoing reforms to strengthen the rule of law in Guyana.
