    Published on

In a significant move to strengthen its leadership and recognize excellence within its ranks, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has announced a series of promotions affecting hundreds of personnel across various levels of the organization.

The promotions, approved by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, were announced in two major waves. The first, effective January 1, 2025, saw the elevation of 525 Other Ranks of the GDF and the Guyana National Reserve. More recently, on February 23, 2025, an additional 41 officers received promotions, coinciding with Guyana’s 55th Republic Anniversary celebrations.

Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, confirmed that these promotions were made in accordance with Part III, Section 16 of the Defence Act 15:01 of 1977, underscoring the legal and procedural integrity of the process.

Among the notable promotions in the officer corps, Commandant of the Guyana National Reserve, Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Souvenir, was elevated to the rank of Substantive Colonel. The Coast Guard also saw significant advancements, with Acting Commander Adrian McLean promoted to Substantive Commander.

The January promotions were particularly extensive, affecting a wide range of ranks:

    • Three Warrant Officers Class Two were elevated to Acting Warrant Officer Class One
    • Two Staff Sergeants were promoted to Substantive Warrant Officer Class Two
    • 57 Corporals were promoted to Acting Sergeant
    • 116 Lance Corporals were elevated to Acting Corporal
    • 49 Privates were promoted to Acting Lance Corporal

The Coast Guard branch of the GDF saw 32 promotions, including advancements in Chief Petty Officer and Senior Petty Officer ranks. Additionally, the Guyana National Reserve had 65 of its ranks promoted.

In the February round of promotions, nine Substantive Majors were elevated to Acting Lieutenant Colonel, while four Captains joined the Corps of Senior Officers as Acting Majors. The Coast Guard saw further advancements, with three Lieutenants promoted to Acting Lieutenant Commander.

These promotions reflect the GDF’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding the dedication, hard work, and professionalism of its personnel. They also serve to strengthen the force’s leadership structure, ensuring it remains well-equipped to meet Guyana’s evolving security needs.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm within the ranks, boosting morale and reinforcing the career progression pathways within the GDF. As Guyana continues to face new challenges and opportunities, particularly with its growing oil sector, a well-structured and motivated defence force is crucial for national security and development.

The GDF leadership has extended congratulations to all promoted personnel, emphasizing that these advancements come with increased responsibilities and expectations. As the force continues to modernize and adapt to new security paradigms, these newly promoted officers and other ranks will play pivotal roles in shaping the future of Guyana’s military capabilities.
