In a pivotal decision aimed at enhancing transportation and fostering economic development, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Wednesday that the government is exploring the introduction of two new ferries—one designated for the Essequibo Coast and another for the North-West District. This announcement was made during a special religious ceremony at the Badrinauth Ashram in Spring Garden, Region Two.
During his address, President Ali highlighted that a team of experts is currently evaluating the most effective options to improve the efficiency and capacity of Guyana’s river transport system, which is crucial for linking communities, businesses, and industries. He underscored the importance of the Essequibo Coast as a growing economic center, particularly in trade, agriculture, and tourism.
Currently, the MV Kanawan and MV Sabanto operate along the Parika-Supenaam route, serving as vital connections between the Essequibo Coast and Demerara. While these ferries have been essential for transporting residents, goods, and agricultural products, the increasing demand calls for a larger and more efficient vessel to meet the needs of the community.
The proposed new ferry service from Parika to Supenaam aims to enhance passenger and vehicle capacity, minimize wait times and congestion at ports, and improve overall reliability and efficiency. This upgrade would ensure timely departures and smoother transportation, especially during peak travel times. Additionally, it would bolster economic growth by facilitating quicker movement of goods, enhancing market access for local businesses, and promoting tourism through more convenient travel options.
With Supenaam being a significant entry point to Essequibo, an upgraded ferry service would further strengthen connectivity between the coast and the rest of Guyana, making travel easier for residents, business owners, and visitors alike. President Ali reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing ferry services as part of its broader vision for national development, which aims to provide remote and rural communities with modern and reliable transportation options.
Regarding the Georgetown–North-West route, President Ali noted the rapid growth in travel and commerce since the introduction of the MV Ma Lisha in 2023. This vessel has made a notable impact on food production, trade, and passenger transport. However, due to rising demand, the President stressed the need for an additional ferry to better serve Region One.
The introduction of a second ferry will facilitate regional trade and food distribution, ensuring efficient transportation of produce, seafood, and other goods. The announcement has sparked excitement among members of the Region Two business community, who have emphasized the necessity of improved transportation systems in the area.
Stakeholders and residents are now looking forward to a transportation system that is more accessible and reliable, capable of meeting the demands of a growing economy. The expansion of ferry services represents a significant step towards creating a more interconnected and prosperous Guyana.
