Opposition Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira has issued a scathing critique of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), accusing the party’s leadership of presiding over a “moral collapse,” deepening ethnic divisions, and betraying their fundamental duty to the nation.
Speaking at a recent public forum, Figueira, who has been an outspoken voice within the opposition coalition, did not mince words as he addressed what he described as a “crisis of leadership and values” within the PNC/R. He charged that the party, once a pillar of national unity and progress, has become mired in internal strife and has failed to provide meaningful direction for Guyana’s diverse population.
“The PNC/R has lost its moral compass,” Figueira declared. “Instead of uniting Guyanese, they have allowed ethnic tensions to fester and have put personal ambition above the national interest. This is a betrayal of the trust placed in us by the people.”
Figueira’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the role of the opposition in Guyana’s political landscape, especially as the country approaches general elections. He called on the party’s leadership to reflect on their actions and recommit to the principles of inclusivity, transparency, and service to all Guyanese.
He also urged party members and supporters to demand accountability and to work towards healing divisions, warning that continued infighting and divisive rhetoric risk undermining both the party’s future and the nation’s stability.
Figueira’s comments have sparked conversations across the political spectrum, with some welcoming his candor and others viewing his critique as a sign of deepening rifts within the opposition. As Guyana looks ahead to a pivotal electoral season, the call for moral renewal and unity is likely to remain at the forefront of national discourse.
