Four Suspects Face Multiple Robbery Charges in High-Profile Case

    Published on

In a significant development in Guyana’s ongoing battle against crime, four men have been charged with five counts of robbery under arms, involving Chinese nationals and a Guyanese citizen. The incident, which occurred on February 12, 2025, in Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, has drawn attention to the persistent issue of armed robberies targeting businesses and individuals in the country.

The accused, identified as Andra Stewart (24), Nya John (25), Negus Lamaizon (28), and Matthew Jahlu (29), appeared before Magistrate Bess at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court on February 17, 2025. They face charges under Section 222(C) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, for allegedly robbing Chinese nationals Liu Bo, Chaung Yang, Wei Han, Qiao Peng Deng, and Guyanese Gary Mitchell.

All four suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. In a decision that has sparked debate about bail practices in serious crime cases, Magistrate Bess granted bail to each defendant in the substantial sum of GYD$1,920,000. The court imposed strict conditions on the bail, including weekly reporting to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters on Vlissengen Road every Friday and the surrender of their passports to authorities.

The suspects, hailing from various parts of Georgetown, represent a cross-section of society:

    • Andra Stewart, unemployed, from Guyhoc Park
    • Nya John, a wash bay operator from Plum Park
    • Negus Lamaizon, a clothes vendor from Durban Street, Lodge
    • Matthew Jahlu, a porter from Howes Street, Charlestown

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organized crime, particularly those targeting businesses owned by foreign nationals. The inclusion of a Guyanese victim alongside the Chinese nationals underscores the indiscriminate nature of such criminal activities.

The robbery, which took place in a residential area known for its commercial establishments, has reignited concerns about security measures and police response times in suburban communities. Local business owners and residents have called for increased police patrols and community policing initiatives to deter similar incidents in the future.

As the case progresses, it is expected to draw significant public interest, given the number of victims involved and the substantial bail amounts set. Legal experts are closely watching the proceedings, as the outcome may set precedents for similar cases in the future.

The Guyana Police Force has reiterated its commitment to thoroughly investigating and prosecuting such crimes. However, the incident has also sparked discussions about the root causes of criminal behavior and the need for comprehensive social and economic strategies to address youth unemployment and crime prevention.

The case has been adjourned to April 10, 2025, allowing time for further investigation and preparation of legal arguments. As the community awaits the next court date, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining public safety and the complex interplay between crime, justice, and social issues in Guyana.
