Three Remanded After CANU Busts in Lethem and Georgetown

    Published on

A series of coordinated anti-narcotics operations by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has resulted in the arrest and charging of three individuals for drug trafficking and firearms offences, following successful interdictions in both Lethem and Georgetown.

On Friday, acting on intelligence, CANU officers conducted a search at a residence in the Tabatinga Housing Scheme, Lethem. During the operation, they discovered a parcel containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis, weighing 1.6 kilograms. The occupant, Elton D’Aguair, was immediately arrested and taken to the CANU Lethem Office.

In a separate operation the same day in Georgetown, CANU ranks intercepted Olrick Fingal in the vicinity of the Royal Hotel on Mandela Avenue. A search of Fingal led to the discovery of eight parcels of suspected cannabis, a CZ pistol, and 19 live rounds of ammunition. The cannabis was later confirmed to weigh 3.810 kilograms.

Additionally, Travon Chapelle was charged in a separate matter involving 1.034 kilograms of cannabis. He appeared before the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

All three men—Elton D’Aguair, Olrick Fingal, and Travon Chapelle—were brought before magistrates in their respective jurisdictions on Monday. Each pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to prison. Their cases are set to continue in June.

CANU has reaffirmed its commitment to aggressively targeting drug trafficking and the illegal possession of firearms, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. These operations underscore the agency’s ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal networks and keep communities safe.
