Police have launched a probe into a late-night shooting incident that occurred near the South Ruimveldt home of Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, raising concerns about the safety of government officials and the wider community.
The incident unfolded around 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, when an unidentified man in a black Mercedes Benz reportedly drove through Sugar Cane Road, discharging a volley of gunfire. More than 15 spent shells were later recovered from the scene. Minister Edghill, whose residence is located on the same street, confirmed that shots were fired at his home. At the time, his wife was in the yard, but neither she nor any other family members were harmed.
“My wife was in the yard. A vehicle came through shooting…more than 15 spent shells were picked up,” Edghill recounted, expressing gratitude for the safety of his family. He also noted that his security detail was present during the incident.
Police responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and collecting evidence as part of their ongoing investigation. While no official statement has been released regarding possible motives, authorities are examining all leads, including the movements of a female seen entering and exiting the suspect vehicle prior to the shooting.
The attack comes just weeks after a suspected arson at Minister Edghill’s church in Lodge, Georgetown. CCTV footage from that incident showed a hooded individual entering the premises shortly before the fire broke out. Investigators have yet to determine if there is any connection between the two incidents.
Minister Edghill addressed the public shortly after the shooting, assuring citizens of his family’s well-being. “The Lord has been our protector. The Edghill’s family is safe in God’s hands. Thank you for all your kind thoughts and prayers,” he posted on social media.
As the investigation continues, the incident has sparked renewed calls for heightened security measures for public officials and a thorough review of recent threats against government figures. The police have urged anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward as they work to bring those responsible to justice.
