A 34-year-old construction worker from Kitty, Georgetown, has been remanded to prison after being charged with threatening behaviour for allegedly holding a knife to his infant child’s neck during a domestic dispute.
Ricardo Caleb, of William Street, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts following an incident that reportedly took place on May 6 at the apartment he shares with his common-law partner. According to court proceedings, the altercation began as a heated argument between Caleb and his partner, escalating to the point where he was accused of threatening their baby, Alicia Valles, with a knife.
The prosecution objected to bail, citing witness statements that Caleb was seen holding a knife to the child’s neck, an act that left the mother terrified and prompted her to report the matter to the police. Caleb, however, denied the allegation, telling the court that while he did have an argument with his partner, he never threatened his child. He explained that after the dispute, he was left alone with the baby and, feeling fearful when people began knocking on the door, picked up both the child and a knife before stepping outside.
Caleb maintained that he never put the knife to his baby’s neck, claiming that a neighbour exaggerated the situation by shouting to police that he was a “madman” who wanted to kill the baby. He said he was arrested and taken to the police station, where he handed the child over to his sister-in-law.
Despite his explanations, Magistrate McGusty refused bail and remanded Caleb to prison until his next court appearance on May 23. The case has drawn significant attention in the community, raising concerns about domestic disputes and child safety.
