Law enforcement officials made a significant discovery over the weekend when a firearm and a quantity of ammunition were found during a search operation at a residence in the Corentyne area.
According to police reports, ranks from the Springlands Police Station acted on intelligence and executed a search warrant at a home in the Number 68 Village on Saturday afternoon. During the search, officers uncovered a .38 revolver along with several matching rounds of ammunition hidden in a bedroom closet.
The homeowner, a 42-year-old male, was present at the time of the operation and was immediately taken into custody. Police sources indicate that the man was unable to produce a valid firearm licence or offer a satisfactory explanation for the presence of the weapon and ammunition on the premises.
The suspect is currently assisting investigators with their inquiries. Charges are expected to be laid as soon as the investigation is complete, and the firearm and ammunition have been sent for ballistic testing to determine if they are linked to any recent criminal activity in the region.
Residents of the usually quiet Corentyne community expressed shock at the discovery, with many commending the police for their swift action. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to removing illegal firearms from the streets and have urged the public to continue providing information that can aid in the fight against crime.
The case is expected to be brought before the courts later this week as police intensify efforts to stem the flow of illegal weapons in Berbice and surrounding areas.
