Berbice Supermarket Heist: Four Suspects Sent to Prison

    Published on

Four men have been remanded to prison following their appearance in court for a daring armed robbery at the Golden Spring Chinese Supermarket, located at Number 66 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

The accused-Jacob Fable, 58, a fisherman of Paramaribo, Suriname and Manchester Village, Berbice; Andre Crandon, 38, a labourer of Corriverton; Joshua Smith, 30, a construction worker of Liverpool Village; and Fitzroy Joseph, 27, a taxi driver of Number 77 Housing Scheme, Corriverton-were jointly charged with nine counts of robbery under arms. The charges stem from the brazen attack on May 8, 2025, during which several customers and the supermarket’s owner were targeted.

According to the prosecution, the men executed a calculated operation, robbing businessperson Zhingang Hu of $1.9 million in cash and a cellphone valued at $100,000. Another victim, Qun Wang, lost $300,000 in cash and a cellphone worth $100,000, while Haresh Persaud was deprived of a Toyota Fielder Wagon valued at $2 million, a Motorola cellphone, and additional cash. Other victims, including Totaram Roopram, Chandrawattie Roopram, and Lynette Shankar, were also robbed of significant sums of cash and valuables.

The accused were not required to enter pleas to the indictable charges when they appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court. The prosecution strongly objected to bail, which was subsequently denied. All four men have been remanded to prison, and the case has been transferred to the Number 51 Magistrates’ Court for continuation on June 11.

Investigators revealed that the suspects admitted their roles in the crime, with one acting as a lookout and another reportedly supplying firearms smuggled from Suriname. A fifth suspect, known by the alias “Edson,†remains at large as police continue their search.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Corentyne community, highlighting ongoing concerns about armed robberies targeting local businesses.
