Guyana’s national team has arrived in Jamaica to compete in the highly anticipated CARICOM 10K Road Race, set for July 5 in Montego Bay. The team—comprising athletes Jelicia Wright, Cleveland Thomas, and Timothy Smith, along with their coach Jonathan Fungudes—touched down on Friday ahead of the event, which is being held as part of the 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.
Before their departure, the athletes paid a courtesy call on the National Sports Commission in Guyana, where they received words of encouragement from Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle and NSC Commissioner Christy Campbell. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission have fully funded the team’s participation, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting local athletes on the regional stage.
The CARICOM 10K, along with a 5K race and a 5K walk, will start at 6:30 am (Eastern Caribbean Time) from the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St James. The event brings together top distance runners from across the Caribbean, with significant prize money and prestigious trophies at stake for both male and female competitors.
Guyana has a strong tradition of success at this event. In the last held edition, Attoya Harvey won the Overall Female category and secured the CARICOM Secretary-General’s Trophy, while Trinidad and Tobago dominated the men’s division.
This year’s Guyanese contingent is aiming to continue that legacy of excellence, with full support from the nation and high hopes for podium finishes in Jamaica.
