Guyana to Compete at CARICOM 10K Road Race in Jamaica

    Published on

Guyana is set to be represented by a trio of athletes at the upcoming CARICOM 10K Road Race scheduled for July 5 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The team comprises experienced campaigner Cleveland Thomas, Jelicia Wright, and Timothy Smith, with Jonathan Fungudes serving as coach.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) confirmed the country’s participation following a recent meeting of CARICOM Directors of Sport, which included Guyana’s Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, alongside the National Sports Commission, is covering all expenses related to Guyana’s involvement in the event.

The CARICOM Road Races, which include the 10K and 5K runs as well as a 5K walk, will start at 6:30 a.m. Eastern Caribbean Time from the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St. James. This event is held as a fringe activity in conjunction with the 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, chaired by Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness.

The competition offers significant prize money, with the winner of the open 10K race receiving US$1,000, and second and third-place finishers earning US$500 and US$250 respectively. The top male and female athletes will also compete for the prestigious CARICOM Chairman’s Trophy and CARICOM Secretary-General’s Trophy.

Last year’s event was cancelled due to Hurricane Beryl, but the 2023 races saw Guyanese and Trinidadian athletes dominate the podium. Guyana’s Attoya Harvey won the overall female category and the Secretary-General’s Trophy, while Trinidad and Tobago swept the men’s division.

Guyana’s participation in the 2025 CARICOM 10K underscores the country’s commitment to regional sporting excellence and the promotion of health and wellness across the Caribbean.
