Golden Jaguars’ Gold Cup Qualifier Relocated to Barbados

    Published on

The Concacaf Gold Cup qualifier between Guyana and Guatemala has been moved to the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Technical Centre. Scheduled for March 21, 2025, the match will kick off at 9:00 PM local time. The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) announced this relocation, attributing it to logistical issues and unsatisfactory playing conditions.

GFF President Wayne Forde explained that this decision aligns with competition regulations, emphasizing the federation’s dedication to ensuring that future home games will take place in Guyana. The Golden Jaguars are set to face a formidable opponent in Guatemala, which is ranked ninth in Concacaf and has a notable history in the Gold Cup, having only missed six tournaments since its inception in 1963.

Currently sitting at 19th in the rankings, Guyana aims to enhance its performance against Guatemala, having faced defeats in their last two encounters: a 3-1 loss in the Nations League and a 4-0 loss during the preliminary rounds of the 2021 Gold Cup. Guyana’s most significant achievement in the Gold Cup was reaching the main draw in 2019; however, they have struggled to advance past the preliminary rounds in subsequent tournaments. The return match will take place in Guatemala on March 25, with Wayne Dover appointed as the interim Head Coach for these fixtures.
