Guyana Boosts Agricultural Sector with New Power and Fertilizer Plants

    Published on

In a bold move to strengthen its agricultural sector, the Guyanese government has announced plans for a second power plant and a new fertilizer facility. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to diversify the country’s economy and bolster its farming industry.

The decision comes as Guyana continues to experience rapid growth in its agricultural sector. Recent data from the World Bank shows that fertilizer consumption in Guyana reached 42.74 kilograms per hectare of arable land in 2022, indicating a growing demand for agricultural inputs.

Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, emphasized the importance of these projects: “These new facilities will provide crucial support to our farmers, enhancing productivity and reducing costs across the agricultural sector.”

The second power plant aims to address the increasing energy needs of Guyana’s expanding agricultural operations. With the country’s ambitious goals for crop diversification and increased production, reliable and affordable electricity is essential for irrigation systems, processing facilities, and cold storage units.

The fertilizer plant, a first for Guyana, is expected to significantly impact the country’s agricultural landscape. By producing fertilizers domestically, Guyana aims to reduce its reliance on imports and stabilize prices for farmers. This move aligns with the government’s recent efforts to mitigate the rising costs of agricultural inputs, including the distribution of $1 billion worth of free fertilizer to farmers in 2022.

These developments are part of Guyana’s broader agricultural diversification strategy. The country has been actively promoting the cultivation of non-traditional crops such as corn, soya, and high-value vegetables. By 2024, Guyana aims to have 26,000 acres under cultivation for these crops, with a goal of achieving self-sufficiency in animal feed production and saving approximately US$60 million annually in imports.

The government’s commitment to agricultural development is evident in its increased budget allocations. In 2022, $38 billion was allocated to the agriculture sector, nearly double the amount from 2020. This investment has supported various initiatives, including flood relief grants for farmers and financial assistance for fisherfolk.

Industry experts view these plans positively. Dr. Oudho Homenauth, CEO of the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute, stated, “The new power and fertilizer plants will be game-changers for our agricultural sector, enabling us to compete more effectively in regional and international markets.”

As Guyana continues to navigate its economic transformation, driven by recent oil discoveries, these agricultural initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to balanced development. By investing in critical infrastructure and supporting traditional sectors, Guyana is working to ensure long-term economic stability and food security for its citizens.

The timeline for the completion of these projects is yet to be announced, but their impact on Guyana’s agricultural sector is expected to be significant, potentially reshaping the country’s economic landscape in the years to come.
