Evelyn’s Steady Innings Anchors CCC on Truncated Day One Against Windward Islands
Evelyn Damel played a pivotal role for Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) during a rain-affected first day of their third-round WI Championship match against the Windward Islands Volcanoes at Windsor Park, Roseau. Despite only 52 overs being bowled, Evelyn’s composed performance helped CCC finish the day at 137 for 5.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, CCC started cautiously, with Johann Jeremiah leading the way. He scored a quickfire 40 runs off 51 balls, hitting five fours and a six before falling to Kenneth Dember in the 19th over. Kieran Powell contributed 11 runs but was soon dismissed by Dember as well, caught by Ryan John.
Evelyn’s innings proved crucial as he anchored the batting line-up, remaining not out on 53 off 126 balls, including seven boundaries. His resilience was vital as wickets fell around him, and he received some support from Shaqkere Parris, who added 19 runs before being trapped lbw by Kavem Hodge.
CCC faced a moment of crisis when Akeem Jordan and Sadique Henry were dismissed in quick succession by Darel Cyrus. Jordan was bowled without scoring, while Henry went for a golden duck, edging a delivery to Hodge.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Demario Richards managed to stabilize the innings towards the end of the day, remaining not out on 4 and partnering with Evelyn to guide CCC to the close of play.
For the Windward Islands, Kenneth Dember and Darel Cyrus each took two wickets, with Dember’s figures standing at 2 for 46 in 16 overs, while Cyrus was economical with 2 for 28 in 18 overs. Kavem Hodge also contributed with a wicket, giving away just two runs in his six overs.
As play is set to resume on day two, CCC will aim to build on their overnight score, with Evelyn looking to convert his half-century into a substantial total to strengthen his team’s position.
