The small community of Vergenoegen was enveloped in sorrow and solidarity on Sunday as hundreds gathered to bid a final farewell to 11-year-old Adriana Sueria Younge, whose tragic death has gripped the nation and sparked widespread calls for justice.
Adriana, a Grade Six pupil of Parika Salem Primary School, was laid to rest at the Vergenoegen Cemetery following an emotional funeral service at the Vergenoegen tarmac. The day began with a viewing at Sandy’s Funeral Home in Pouderoyen, where mourners—many dressed in red to symbolize the demand for justice—paid their respects to the young girl remembered for her warmth, intellect, and promise.
Her life was cut short nearly two months ago when she was found dead in the swimming pool of the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen on April 24. The circumstances surrounding her death have ignited a national outcry, uniting thousands both in Guyana and across the diaspora in grief and protest. Chants of “Justice for Adriana!†echoed throughout the funeral procession, reflecting the deep pain and frustration felt by family, friends, and supporters.
The funeral service, attended by a sea of mourners sheltered under tents adorned with pink flowers and drapes, featured heartfelt tributes, poems, and a moving eulogy. The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as speakers recalled Adriana’s gentle spirit and the dreams she never got to fulfill.
The investigation into Adriana’s death has been fraught with controversy. While three internationally recognized pathologists concluded that her death was consistent with drowning and found no evidence of foul play, her family has consistently challenged the findings, insisting that crucial questions remain unanswered. A second autopsy was conducted in the United States, but the final report is still pending, with the family’s attorney stating that further details from Guyanese authorities are required before the report can be completed.
Despite the official ruling, the family and many supporters continue to press for a full, independent investigation, appealing to international agencies for assistance. The case file is currently being prepared for review by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
As Adriana was laid to rest, her family and supporters vowed to continue their pursuit of truth and justice. The day’s events served as both a poignant farewell and a powerful reminder of the collective demand for accountability and change in the wake of her untimely passing.
