    Sparendaam Electrician Charged with Larceny

    Published on

A 29-year-old electrician from Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this week after being charged with larceny in connection with the theft of valuable electrical equipment from a local business.

According to police reports, the accused, identified as Kevin Ramnarine, was arrested following an investigation into the disappearance of several electrical tools and materials from a hardware store where he had been contracted for repair work. The items, valued at over $500,000, were reported missing earlier this month, prompting the store’s management to alert authorities.

During the court hearing, prosecutors alleged that Ramnarine used his access to the premises to remove the items over several days. Surveillance footage and witness statements reportedly placed him at the scene during the times the thefts occurred.

Ramnarine pleaded not guilty to the charge and was represented by attorney-at-law Priya Singh, who argued for reasonable bail, citing his steady employment and lack of prior convictions. The prosecution, however, objected to bail, highlighting the seriousness of the offense and the potential for witness tampering.

Magistrate Leron Daly ultimately granted Ramnarine bail in the sum of $100,000 with strict conditions, including regular reporting to the Sparendaam Police Station and a prohibition on contacting witnesses involved in the case. The matter has been adjourned to June 24 for further statements.

The case has drawn attention in the Sparendaam community, with residents expressing concern over rising incidents of theft and urging businesses to tighten security measures. The investigation remains ongoing as police seek to recover the stolen property.
