Four men have been remanded to prison after being jointly charged with nine counts of armed robbery following a brazen attack on the Golden Spring Supermarket at Number 66 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The accused-Jacob Fable, also known as Samuel, 58, a fisherman from Paramaribo, Suriname and Manchester Village; Andre Crandon, called “Gun Man,” 38, a labourer from Little India, Corriverton; Joshua Smith, known as “Bias,” 30, a construction worker from Liverpool Village; and Fitzroy Joseph, called “Mansel,” 27, a hire car driver from Number 77 Housing Scheme, Corriverton-appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Springlands Magistrates’ Court. The charges stem from a violent robbery that took place on the evening of May 8, 2025.
According to police reports, the four men entered the Golden Spring Supermarket, owned by Chinese national Zing Hong, armed with guns. They allegedly robbed the owner and several customers, making off with more than $3.2 million in cash, jewellery, and a motor vehicle. Among the victims were supermarket staff and customers, who were relieved of valuables ranging from gold jewellery and cellphones to significant sums of cash. One customer, Haresh Persaud, was reportedly robbed of a Toyota Fielder Wagon valued at $2.2 million.
Investigations revealed that the suspects meticulously planned the heist. Fable reportedly admitted to police that he orchestrated the robbery and supplied the firearms, which were smuggled from Suriname. Joseph confessed to acting as a lookout near a nearby gas station, alerting the group if police responded. Both Smith and Crandon also admitted their involvement, identifying themselves in CCTV footage from the supermarket.
The four men were not required to enter pleas to the indictable charges. Bail was denied, and they were remanded to prison until their next court appearance on June 11, when a police progress report is expected. The case has been transferred to the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court.
Police are actively pursuing a fifth suspect, known by the alias “Edson,” believed to be connected to the robbery. Meanwhile, authorities have recovered the stolen vehicle and continue to investigate leads in the case.
No major injuries were reported during the incident, but the community remains shaken by the audacity of the crime and the involvement of suspects from both Guyana and Suriname. The swift action by law enforcement led to the arrest and confession of the accused, offering some reassurance to local residents and business owners.
