Venezuelan Delivery Rider Killed in Tragic Nelson Mandela Avenue Collision

    Published on

A 26-year-old Venezuelan national, Keinner Hernandez, lost his life in a tragic road accident on Nelson Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, on Wednesday afternoon. Hernandez, a delivery rider and well-known member of the Venezuelan migrant community in Guyana, was reportedly attempting to overtake a motor lorry when the fatal collision occurred.

According to police reports, Hernandez was riding his motorcycle east along the southern drive lane of the northern carriageway. In an attempt to overtake a lorry, he swerved into the path of another eastbound blue motor lorry, resulting in a violent impact. The collision caused Hernandez and his motorcycle to fall onto the roadway, where they were subsequently run over by the lorry.

Emergency medical teams responded promptly, but Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. The driver of the lorry, a 21-year-old from Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, has been taken into custody and is assisting police with the ongoing investigation.

Hernandez’s death has sent shockwaves through the Venezuelan migrant community in Guyana, where he was known not only as a hardworking provider for his family back home but also as a friendly and active member of a softball team seeking to introduce the sport locally. Community members are now rallying to raise funds to return his remains to Venezuela, where his grieving mother awaits the opportunity to give him a final farewell.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by delivery riders and motorcyclists on Guyana’s busy roads, prompting renewed calls for caution and improved road safety measures.
