The much-anticipated clash between Regal and Ariel Masters is set to be the centerpiece of the Guyana Softball Cricket League (GSCL) Inc Republic Cup T20 softball tournament, which kicks off tomorrow at the Police Sports Club in Eve Leary and the Queen’s College grounds in Georgetown.
This year’s tournament has received a significant boost from Panama’s Ofimak, a long-time supporter of the GSCL, through the efforts of Mahendra “Anil†Hardyal, Managing Director of Regal Stationery & Computer Centre, which serves as Ofimak’s exclusive distributor in Guyana. Joining Ofimak in sponsorship are Regal Stationery & Computer Centre itself and Trophy Stall, with the latter generously providing all trophies, thanks to its proprietor, Ramesh Sunich. Additionally, Terminex Pest Control and Elegant Jewelry and Pawn Shop have recently come on board as sponsors.
During a draw held on Tuesday at the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) pavilion, GSCL President Ian John announced that this year’s tournament will feature two categories: Masters Over-40 and Legends Over-50. He expressed disappointment that there would be no Open or Women’s teams due to late entries and the unavailability of grounds.
The Masters category will include six teams, with Hyde Park Masters and Fisherman Masters joining Regal Masters and Ariel Masters in the competition. Both Regal and Ariel Masters have impressive lineups, featuring notable players such as Richard Latif, Chien Gittens, and Patrick Rooplall.
In the Legends Over-50 category, four teams will compete: Regal Legends, Parika Legends, Aash Decor Legends, and Premier Insurance Legends. The preliminary rounds for the Masters will take place at the Queen’s College ground, while the Legends will compete at the Police Sports Club ground on Friday and Saturday, culminating in the grand finale on Sunday. Morning matches in the preliminary rounds are set to begin at 9:00 AM, with afternoon games starting at 1:00 PM.
