The government of Guyana has intensified its efforts to accelerate development in Pigeon Island, a community located on the East Coast of Demerara. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address existing development gaps and ensure equitable access to essential services across the region.
Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, recently engaged with residents of Pigeon Island to outline key projects and updates on ongoing initiatives. The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing improved infrastructure and services, highlighting significant progress in water access and community regularization.
One of the major developments is the upgrade of the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Water Treatment Plant, which will provide treated water to residents by the end of April. This project addresses long-standing water challenges faced by the community.
Additionally, the government has facilitated the regularization of a section of the community, enabling residents to achieve legal homeownership. This move aligns with the Ministry’s broader housing agenda, which has seen over 17,000 house lots allocated on the East Coast since 2020.
The government has also invested heavily in developing housing schemes across the East Coast, transforming previously undeveloped lands into thriving residential communities. Key infrastructure projects, such as the Ogle Bypass Road and improved road networks, are expected to enhance connectivity, boost economic activity, and create job opportunities.
Minister Croal assured residents that the East Coast’s housing and infrastructure development will match, if not surpass, those on the East Bank. The government remains committed to addressing informal settlements by monitoring areas for regularization and, where necessary, relocating residents.
This accelerated development in Pigeon Island reflects the government’s broader vision of ensuring that all communities benefit from national development initiatives, fostering a more equitable and prosperous society.
