Government’s Support for Remaining Mocha Squatters
In light of the recent court ruling, which favored the government in its case against the Mocha/Arcadia squatters, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali is actively reaching out to assist these residents as they navigate the challenges ahead. While members of the opposition who previously pledged support for the squatters remain quiet post-verdict, President Ali is emphasizing the government’s commitment to inclusivity and the welfare of its citizens.
During a live broadcast, President Ali expressed his readiness to collaborate with the remaining squatters, highlighting the government’s dedication to ensuring that all citizens are treated with compassion and respect. He stated, “We are a humane government. We regard every citizen as our responsibility.â€
The squatters had sought over $200 million in damages in their legal battle with the government but were unsuccessful. Their refusal to vacate the state-owned lands, despite ample notice from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) and various relocation incentives, ultimately led to their court defeat.
President Ali pointed out that it is regrettable that the opposition has not continued to advocate for the squatters after their loss, suggesting that they were misled in their expectations. “While they remain silent, your president is here for you. The People’s Progressive Party/Civic government has an open door policy aimed at improving the lives of all Guyanese, including yours,†he asserted.
The court’s decision, delivered by Chief Justice Roxane George, confirmed that the squatters hold no rights or claims to the contested lands, which are situated in Block ‘X’ Plantation Herstelling, East Bank Demerara. This area is also significant as it lies along the new Heroes Highway.
