Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC, received a courtesy call on Thursday from three members of the United States Marshals Service. During the meeting, which took place in Guyana, the Marshals emphasized the purpose of their one-week visit, which revolves around enhancing security cooperation between Guyana and the United States. The discussions focused on crime-fighting initiatives, extradition processes, and other pertinent areas of mutual concern.

The Marshals conveyed their satisfaction with the meeting, stating, “The meeting was very good. We held discourse on varying local laws and the local legal system, standards and requirements for extradition. We also discussed the status of pending cases and best practices for successful extradition.†They expressed gratitude to the DPP for the ongoing assistance and support received in both recent and past cases.

In a significant development, following the passage of the Fugitive Offenders (Amendment) Bill in July 2024, Guyana has successfully extradited several offenders to the USA and Canada, responding to extradition requests from those nations.

On Tuesday, the Marshals also met with Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn. This meeting, conducted in the ministry’s boardroom, centered on key cooperation areas, including crime-fighting strategies, extradition processes, and mutual agreements designed to bolster security collaboration between Guyana and the United States. A post on the ministry’s social media highlighted the commitment of both parties to strengthening law enforcement partnerships and addressing regional security challenges.
