Guyana and France Strengthen Military Ties at Regional Exchange Meeting
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is currently hosting a delegation from the French Armed Forces, specifically the French Guiana contingent, for the 3rd Regional Military Exchange Meeting. This event is taking place at the Officers’ Mess, Base Camp Ayanganna, Georgetown, and aims to enhance military cooperation while exploring new areas of partnership between Guyana and France.
During the formal opening ceremony on Tuesday, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, warmly welcomed the French delegation, which was led by Major General Marc Le Bouil, the Superior Commander of the Armed Forces in French Guiana. Brigadier Khan expressed his gratitude for the delegation’s visit, underscoring the strong and enduring relationship that has been established between the two nations, rooted in both military and civil partnerships.
Brigadier Khan emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, especially in light of France’s plans to establish its first embassy in Guyana. He stated, “Our partnership extends beyond the military domain and includes economic, trade, and diplomatic relations. We look forward to deepening our relationship and reinforcing our shared commitment to regional security and stability.â€
The Chief of Defence Staff also acknowledged France’s ongoing support for Guyana, noting that it has played a critical role in strengthening the country’s security posture, building mutual trust, and enhancing bilateral relations.
In his remarks, Major General Le Bouil echoed Brigadier Khan’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of building capacity and trust between the two nations. He remarked on the collaborative efforts of Guyana and France in addressing common challenges, stating that such cooperation is vital for ensuring stability and peace. “It is crucial for both countries to maintain a strong relationship; having a strong neighbor is important,†he noted.
