Region Three Sees Major Boost as Road Improvements Transform Local Access

    Published on

Residents in Region Three are experiencing significant improvements in their road networks thanks to upgraded asphaltic concrete roads. The recent infrastructural developments took place in several communities, including La Parfaite Harmonie, Onderneeming, Westminster, Recht-Door-Zee, and Lust-en-Rust. This initiative, executed by the Ministry of Public Works Special Projects Unit (SPU), resulted in approximately 31 kilometres of roadworks, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s commitment to improving local infrastructure.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, along with SPU engineers, highlighted that Schoonord received the most extensive upgrades, with 6,897.8 metres of roads rehabilitated. Key streets such as Nursery School Street, Special Needs School Street, and the Main Road were included in this upgrade. In Onderneeming, six important streets were enhanced, totaling 4,715.8 metres, including NCN Road, Fourth Street, and White Shop Shortcut.

La Parfaite Harmonie saw the most considerable improvement with a single stretch of 14,499.3 metres, which included the main access road, Harmony Drive, along with various avenues and cross streets. Recht-Door-Zee benefited from 2,923.2 metres of road rehabilitation, while Lust-en-Rust and Westminster had their main roads upgraded, measuring 1,074 and 1,084.8 metres, respectively.

In addition, around 19 kilometres of internal roads are currently undergoing upgrades by approximately 74 local contractors, utilizing asphaltic concrete for these rehabilitations. These efforts are part of the government’s commitment to infrastructural development outlined in its 2020-2025 manifesto, aiming to bolster regional growth. For 2025, the government has earmarked $209.3 billion to further enhance the country’s road and bridge infrastructure.
