CARICOM and WFP Launch Real-Time Food Security Dashboard for Caribbean

    Published on

Georgetown, Guyana â€“ The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has launched the Caribbean Real-Time Food Security Monitoring Dashboard, a cutting-edge digital platform aimed at addressing food insecurity across the region.

Unveiled on April 10, 2025, the dashboard provides live updates on food security conditions in 11 CARICOM member states, including Guyana, Barbados, Haiti, Jamaica, and Suriname. By integrating real-time data from household surveys, macroeconomic indicators, and climate-related impacts, the platform enables governments and policymakers to monitor trends and respond swiftly to emerging food security challenges.

Dr. Carla Barnett, CARICOM Secretary-General, hailed the dashboard as a symbol of resilience and a transformative tool for fostering a food-secure future. “This initiative is more than just a monitoring tool; it represents our commitment to achieving food and nutrition security for all citizens in the region,†she stated during the virtual launch event.

The dashboard’s data collection process involves monthly surveys conducted via computer-assisted telephone interviews across participating countries. These surveys gather insights on demographics, livelihoods, coping strategies, market conditions, and food consumption patterns. The information is then analyzed and displayed on the platform to inform strategic decision-making and emergency preparedness efforts.

Mr. Brian Bogart, WFP Caribbean Multi-Country Office Representative and Country Director, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing food insecurity. “This dashboard reflects our shared commitment to building resilient food systems and advancing the goal of zero hunger in the Caribbean,†he said.

The initiative comes at a critical time for the region, where approximately 43% of residents face food insecurity due to climate-related events, supply chain disruptions, and inflation. CARICOM’s Heads of Government have extended their “25 by 2025†initiative—aimed at reducing food imports by 25%—to 2030 to allow for greater investment and stakeholder participation in strengthening agri-food systems.

The dashboard also offers quarterly analytical reports that provide comprehensive insights into regional food security trends. These reports will be accessible to governments, researchers, and development agencies to foster transparency and track progress toward collective goals.

Supported by funding from Canada and the European Union, the platform represents a collaborative effort to address one of the Caribbean’s most pressing challenges. With its integration of real-time data and risk monitoring systems, it is expected to enhance anticipatory action during crises and ensure timely support for vulnerable populations.

As CARICOM continues its efforts to build sustainable food systems across its member states, this innovative dashboard is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping policies that prioritize resilience and equity in food access for all citizens.
