Over $100 Billion Invested Since 2020 in Modernizing the Guyana Defence Force
Since 2020, the government has injected over $100 billion to enhance and modernize the operations of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), ensuring it is equipped to tackle emerging security challenges effectively. President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasized that this transformation is imperative, particularly given the past shortcomings resulting from significant underfunding by the previous administration.
The Ali administration has significantly raised the defence budget, committing approximately $115 billion between 2020 and 2024, with $50.4 billion allocated for the current year alone. This figure stands in stark contrast to the mere $14 billion designated by the coalition government in 2019.
“This investment is part of our strategy to build a more agile and capable organization that can protect our sovereignty, secure our borders, and address emerging threats,†President Ali stated during the opening of the Annual Officers’ Conference on Thursday morning.
A major aspect of this modernization effort focuses on acquiring advanced equipment and technology. The President informed high-ranking officers that new helicopters, maritime surveillance vessels, and drones will be procured to enhance land border surveillance, maritime security, and disaster response management. These improvements will enable the GDF to respond effectively and be better prepared for any crises.
The government is also prioritizing human resource development, providing extensive training for ranks both locally and internationally. Since 2020, around 6,445 ranks have undergone training, costing over $2.5 billion. President Ali noted that the establishment of the National Defence Institution reinforces the commitment to developing the force’s human capital.
“Every officer who retires undergoes an evaluation to determine how their skills can be reintegrated into the economy. We are committed to investing in you and your welfare now and in the future, ensuring you lead a continuously productive life here in Guyana,†President Ali explained.
Moreover, partnerships with international allies have played a key role in this transformation, with the GDF strengthening its military collaboration with the United States, focusing on knowledge transfer and joint training exercises. The President assured that his government will continue to enhance benefits, including increased salaries and specialized healthcare for the ranks.
