New Legislation to be Introduced Next Monday
Next Monday, the government will present three new bills in the National Assembly aimed at enhancing crime-fighting initiatives and improving cooperation with Caribbean nations. The bills set to be introduced are the CARICOM Arrest Warrant Bill, the Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record Bill, and the Regional Security Systems Bill.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, emphasized that these proposed laws are in line with Guyana’s obligations to CARICOM and international treaties. “This legislative initiative is another step in our fight against crime, designed to strengthen our capabilities in this area,†he noted during his appearance on the ‘Issues in the News’ program on Tuesday.
Minister Nandlall elaborated that the passenger information legislation will establish a legal framework for the sharing of travel data concerning passengers and cargo among CARICOM member states. The CARICOM Arrest Warrant Bill is intended to ensure that criminals are held accountable consistently across the region. Additionally, the Regional Security Systems Bill will officially incorporate the regional security systems (RSS) into Guyana’s law enforcement framework, following the country’s membership in the RSS in 2022. “Numerous countries have already passed the Regional Security Systems Bill. Since Guyana recently joined the RSS, we need to enact this law,†he clarified.
In addition to these security-related bills, several other legislative measures from outside the security sector will also be presented. These initiatives are part of the government’s wider strategy to modernize the legal framework in response to emerging challenges.
