    WEATHER ADVISORY- PROLONGED RAINFALL WITH FLOODING

    The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) wishes to inform the public that the Hydrometeorological Service  advises periods of rainfall, with the potential to cause flooding, these conditions are expected to persist  across Guyana from MAY 11-13, 2026. On May 14 and 15, 2026, a more significant increase in  rainfall is expected. For the next five days, the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly  drained areas, is likely. The latest forecast models’ outputs indicate that all Regions are likely to be  impacted during this period. 

    Precautions/Preparedness Steps to be taken  

    • Avoid flood-prone areas whenever possible. 
    • Exercise extreme caution when driving or walking during rainfall, especially in areas affected by pooling water. 
    • Keep drains, trenches, and waterways clear to reduce the risk of flooding. 
    • Secure important documents, household items, and other valuables 
    • Prepare sandbags and have them handy • Raise your furniture if you reside in the lower flat of a building 
    • Monitor future forecasts and updates.

    • Coastal flooding  
    • Drainage overflow and Road inundation  Agricultural flooding (crops and livestock at  risk). 
    • Riverine flooding and possible community  isolation  
    • Transportation delays (airstrips, trails)
