The Ministry of Education has introduced the Math QuizMe competition as part of its National Mathematics Intervention initiative, aiming to improve student performance in the upcoming Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Mathematics exam. This new program is the latest in a series of efforts by the ministry to address declining math scores and increase pass rates.
The competition, which involves secondary schools across Guyana, is designed to engage students in interactive learning and provide additional practice in exam-style questions. This approach aligns with the ministry’s broader strategy of using technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance math education.
In a notable achievement, 17 students from Mahaicony Secondary School have attained full marks in the competition:
- Rolanzo Cornelius
- Akanbi Knights
- Kheron Chattergoon
- Josiah Chichester
- Keara Thomas
- Sylar Sealey
- Criscal Duke
- Allandres Archer
- Dhanayswarie Kumar
- Shawn Gibbons
- Nishowna Cameron
- Ksnel Gibbons
- Arianna Bourne
- Onasis Frank
- Alliya Rollins
- Howard Cummings
- Daviann Daniels
This success demonstrates the potential of the QuizMe initiative to improve student engagement and performance in mathematics.
The Math QuizMe competition is part of a comprehensive approach that includes:
- Deployment of 50 math monitors to assist in classrooms
- Introduction of a math support hotline (736-MATH)
- Provision of additional resources like geometry sets and scientific calculators
- Weekly math-focused programming on the Guyana Learning Channel
With these measures in place, the Ministry of Education aims to significantly improve the math pass rate, which dropped to 31% in 2024, with a target of at least 40% for the 2025 CSEC examinations.
