A disturbing case of domestic violence has come to light in Guyana, as a man faces multiple charges for assaulting his mistress and fracturing his stepdaughter’s nose.
The accused, whose name has not been released to protect the victims’ identities, was arraigned before the court on February 26, 2025, on charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on February 23, 2025, at the family’s residence in Georgetown. The man allegedly got into a heated argument with his mistress, which escalated into physical violence. When his 14-year-old stepdaughter attempted to intervene, he reportedly turned his aggression towards her, resulting in a fractured nose.
The victims were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they received medical treatment. The stepdaughter’s injury was classified as grievous bodily harm due to the severity of the fracture.
Law enforcement officials stated that neighbors alerted the police after hearing screams coming from the house. Upon arrival, officers found the victims in distress and immediately took the suspect into custody.
The case has sparked outrage in the community, with advocates for domestic violence prevention calling for stricter measures to protect vulnerable individuals, especially children, from such abuse.
The accused has been remanded to prison pending trial, with the next court date set for March 15, 2025. If convicted, he faces significant jail time for his actions.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Guyana and the need for continued efforts to address this societal problem.
