Fire Engulfs Mae’s School, Displacing Over 1,000 Students

    Published on

A devastating fire swept through Mae’s School in Subryanville, Georgetown, Guyana on Wednesday morning, March 5, 2025, completely destroying the institution and displacing approximately 1,100 students. The blaze, which started shortly before 8:00 AM, rapidly consumed the wooden structure housing the primary department and damaged the secondary section.

    Immediate Response and Evacuation

As the fire broke out, staff and students were swiftly evacuated. Most students had not yet arrived for the school day, and those present were quickly escorted to safety. The Guyana Fire Service responded promptly, employing Bronto Skylifts to contain the blaze. Private sector support, including water tankers from Banks DIH, assisted in the firefighting efforts.

    Injuries and Damages

At least two firemen were injured during the operation. The primary department, made of wood, was completely destroyed, while the secondary section, constructed of concrete, suffered significant damage. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, though there were reports of power fluctuations in the area during the week leading up to the incident.

    Government Response

Education Minister Priya Manickchand visited the scene and pledged full support from the government to ensure the continuity of education for affected students. The Ministry of Education is working to accommodate students in public schools, with particular attention to those preparing for the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

    Future Plans and Support

The school’s administration is working on setting up temporary accommodations on the school grounds, including tents and potentially offering online classes. The Georgetown International Academy has agreed to accommodate 350 students, and other private institutions have offered assistance.

President Irfaan Ali met with school owners, staff, and parents at State House, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the students’ swift return to learning. A special committee has been established to develop a plan moving forward, and counseling services will be provided for affected students, parents, and teachers.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, efforts are underway to minimize disruptions to students’ education and provide necessary support to all those affected by the fire.
