Guyana Welcomes Chinese Investment Amidst Growing Bilateral Ties

The government of Guyana has reiterated its dedication to promoting international investment, particularly with its trade partners in China. Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat made this announcement during the Spring Festival celebration at Berbice High School, highlighting an open-door policy aimed at fostering free trade and minimal restrictions on imports and exports.

With bilateral trade between Guyana and China projected to rise by US$1.4 billion in 2024, Bharrat emphasized the importance of equal market access for all trading partners, especially China. He noted that this approach is designed to stimulate economic growth, enhance competition, and promote international collaboration.

During his speech, Bharrat acknowledged the significant investments made by Chinese companies in various sectors, including gold mining, quarrying, bauxite, and manganese. He specifically mentioned the Zijin Gold Company, which operates Guyana’s first underground gold mine.

“Guyana, as a nation, maintains an open-door policy for international cooperation with all countries. Our goal in partnerships is to ensure they are mutually beneficial, which is clearly demonstrated by the ongoing investments in Guyana,†Bharrat stated.

He further highlighted the presence of major Chinese companies in the bauxite and manganese sectors, reflecting the robust nature of Chinese investments in Guyana. Bharrat expressed optimism about continued collaboration to attract further investments across different industries.

The Minister also praised the longstanding partnership between Guyana and China, referencing President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s visit to China and discussions with President Xi Jinping as pivotal moments in strengthening bilateral relations.

Expressing gratitude for Chinese investments in infrastructure, ranging from roads to airports and commercial establishments like supermarkets and restaurants, Bharrat indicated that Guyana is on the cusp of modernization and economic expansion.

“There are many aspects we can celebrate regarding China’s presence in our country. We admire your economic stewardship and the remarkable development taking place in China,†he remarked.

As Guyana positions itself as one of the fastest-growing economies globally, Bharrat is optimistic about witnessing the transformation of the nation, fulfilling the dreams of its ancestors who worked tirelessly for such progress.
