Charis Griffith: A Forensic Pioneer and Community Advocate

Charis Griffith, a dedicated forensic chemist, currently holds the position of Deputy Director at the Guyana Forensic Science Laboratory. Her fascination with forensics was ignited early in life by a passion for mystery novels and crime-solving narratives. From the thrilling plots of James Patterson to the adventures of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, her childhood was enriched by stories that sparked her curiosity. Additionally, television series like NCIS and Murder She Wrote further fueled her interest, posing a myriad of questions: “How? When? Why? Where? Who?” These inquiries inspired her to join the characters in their quests for truth.

Growing up on Hadfield Street in Lodge, Charis was unaware of any forensic scientists in Guyana, making the prospect of a forensics career seem daunting and unfamiliar. “I didn’t even know if my dreams were a possibility,” she recalls. Nevertheless, her determination and curiosity propelled her forward. Upon earning her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Guyana, she bravely decided to journey to the United Kingdom to pursue her dream.

Studying at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge was a mix of excitement and fear for Charis. She faced self-doubt, questioning her abilities and sense of belonging in a new environment. “I had many doubts,” she confesses. “I wondered if I’d made the right choice, if I was smart enough, strong enough. But I realised that growth doesn’t happen in comfort zones.” Despite these challenges, Charis persevered, ultimately achieving her Master of Science in Forensic Science with distinction, a clear reflection of her resilience and commitment.

Charis’s career at the Guyana Forensic Science Laboratory is characterized by her unwavering dedication to excellence. Beginning as a Science Officer and Head of the Chemistry Department, she ascended to the roles of Senior Science Officer and now Deputy Director. Throughout her professional journey, she has encountered numerous obstacles, particularly in navigating forensic science within a developing nation. However, she views these challenges as opportunities for growth and enhancement of systems that aid in crime-solving and justice delivery.

“I believe in the power of science to bring clarity in moments of uncertainty,” Charis expresses. “Every case is a puzzle, and the answer lies in the details. That’s what drives me every day, to find those answers and make a real difference.” Her responsibilities extend beyond administration; Charis actively engages in improving analytical techniques, developing policies, nurturing staff growth, and promoting collaborations with regional and international forensic laboratories. Her precise attention to detail and commitment to ongoing improvement have significantly advanced the laboratory’s work, benefiting both the scientific community and the legal system.

Charis’s impact reaches beyond the confines of the lab. A fervent volunteer, she embodies the principle of service above self. Her leadership roles include past president of the Rotaract Club of the University of Guyana, a leader in the local Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme (President’s Youth Award—Republic of Guyana [PYARG]), and ongoing volunteer work with the Guyana Red Cross Society and the Civil Defence Commission. Whether spearheading community initiatives or aiding in disaster relief, Charis’s dedication to service illustrates her commitment to making a difference beyond her professional obligations.

“I’ve always felt that giving back is just as important as pursuing your own goals,” she reflects. “Service is an essential part of being a leader. Whether it’s mentoring young people or helping during a crisis, it’s about making a positive impact wherever you can.”

As we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS), Charis Griffith exemplifies the essence of purposeful leadership, passion, and an unyielding quest for knowledge. Her journey serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging young girls and women to carve their own paths in fields like forensics and science, driven by curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to service. Charis’s contributions to both science and community service are not only shaping the present but also inspiring the future of young women in STEM.
