As Guyana marks Labour Day 2025, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has reaffirmed its commitment to the nation’s working class, highlighting significant improvements in the lives of working families and the broader workforce over the past four and a half years.
In its Labour Day message, the PPP celebrated the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Guyanese workers, emphasizing that their collective strength continues to build the nation and shape its future. The party described Labour Day as not just a celebration but a moment for critical reflection-an opportunity to assess progress and ensure that workers’ rights and dignity remain central to national development.
The PPP pointed to a series of tangible achievements since returning to office in August 2020. According to the party, more than 60,000 Guyanese who were unemployed in 2020 are now working, and over 50,000 people have received government-funded training and scholarships, preparing them for modern, in-demand careers. The education sector has also seen growth, with thousands of teachers trained and 3,000 new teachers hired.
Labour relations have improved, the PPP said, with the restoration of collective bargaining and the signing of multi-year agreements with major unions. Tax thresholds have been increased, and tax relief measures for overtime and second jobs have boosted disposable income for working families. Additionally, one-off relief payments have been distributed to thousands of workers previously denied National Insurance Scheme benefits.
Housing and job creation have also been focal points, with thousands of house lots distributed and sustainable jobs generated across sectors such as construction, health, education, technology, energy, manufacturing, and agriculture.
The PPP’s message underscored that Labour Day should always be used to celebrate, track progress, and ask whether life has improved for workers. “In today’s Guyana, the answer is a resounding yes,” the statement declared, pointing to new schools, roads, job opportunities, and policies as evidence of the government’s commitment to placing the welfare of working people at the heart of development.
As the nation honours its workers, the PPP pledged to continue championing fairness, equity, and dignity in the workplace, ensuring that the benefits of Guyana’s growth are shared by all, with no one left behind. The message closed with a call for unity and purpose, expressing confidence that together, Guyanese will build a nation defined by hope, opportunity, and prosperity for all.
