General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has rejected claims by APNU’s presidential candidate Aubrey Norton that it is “implausible” for his party to drop from some 116,941 votes in the 2020 elections to 46,956 at Monday’s polls for Region Four – the country’s largest voting district.
According to Jagdeo, it is not implausible, and the numbers clearly show that it is the WIN party that gained votes that traditionally went to APNU.
For Region Four, WIN secured 41,607 votes in the general elections and 41,930 in the regional elections.
Combined with APNU’s votes, Jagdeo highlighted that it comes up to about just over 88,000 votes.
This pattern is observed in other APNU strongholds such as Region Ten, Jagdeo pointed out.
The PPP/C, for the first time in the country’s history, has taken control of Region Four. In the general elections, the PPP/C secured a remarkable 87,536 votes, while in the regional elections it received 87,018.
This marks a notable increase from the 2020 elections, when the party garnered 80,920 votes in the general and 81,279 in the regional – reflecting a gain of over 6,600 votes.
Jagdeo explained that it is not implausible that the PPP/C increases by some 6000 votes. He further contended that these results are not surprising.
“…the signs were there, they refused to accept what was clear, what was evident to every other Guyanese…But they stuck their heads in the sand and refused to deal with this situation,” he contended.
In fact, Jagdeo pointed out that he previously cautioned that it was APNU that had to be worried about WIN impacting its support base.
“We saw it coming, they should have seen it coming…[but] they persisted with this fallacy that somehow he [WIN’s presidential candidate Azruddin Mohamed] would have gotten the PPP/C support and cause us to be a minority government,” he noted.
