“We Cannot Secure a Future if Our Children Are Not Inspired” – PM Phillips at Environmental Storybook Launch

    Published on

Prime Minister Mark Phillips has underscored the vital role of inspiration in shaping Guyana’s future, especially when it comes to environmental stewardship among the nation’s youth. Speaking at the launch of the children’s storybook “Ollie the Otter’s River Adventures,” Phillips emphasized that the country’s long-term sustainability depends on engaging and inspiring its youngest citizens.

The storybook, developed by Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC), aims to promote environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation among children. At the launch event, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of involving citizens in conservation efforts from an early age. “This storybook is a vital part of that mission,” he said. “It brings biodiversity into the classroom, the home, the hearts and minds of our young people; because no strategy can succeed if our citizens are not informed. We cannot secure a future if our children are not inspired.”

Phillips also spoke about the transformative power of storytelling in education, describing it as “one of the most powerful tools in education.” He noted that incorporating storytelling into sustainability education makes environmental protection personal and reinforces a sense of urgency and importance in even the youngest of minds.

The launch was attended by key figures including EMC Foundation Director Shyam Nokta, Toshao Alvoro Simon of St Cuthbert’s Mission/Pakuri Village, government officials, and members of the diplomatic community. The event also spotlighted the EMC Foundation’s recent efforts to broaden environmental education, such as the release of a bilingual audio series and audiobook version of “Arya Takes a Swim,” narrated in both English and Arawak. This initiative aims to promote environmental awareness and cultural preservation, particularly in Indigenous communities, and is being distributed to schools and communities nationwide with plans for inclusion in the Ministry of Education’s curriculum.

The storybook launch and related projects reflect Guyana’s growing focus on inspiring the next generation to value and protect the environment—an investment Prime Minister Phillips believes is essential for the nation’s future.
