President Ali Calls for Bold Action on Regional Unity

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has issued a powerful call for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to intensify efforts in strengthening regional collaboration and expanding intra-regional trade. Speaking on the occasion of CARICOM Day, President Ali emphasized that regional integration is no longer a distant aspiration but an urgent necessity for the economic stability, resilience, and growth of the region.

Key Points from President Ali’s Address

    • Boosting Intra-Regional Trade: President Ali stressed the importance of expanding trade among CARICOM member states as a key driver for economic growth and stability. He urged countries to harness the region’s collective potential, noting that stronger economic linkages will help the Caribbean withstand external pressures.
    • Food Security and Energy Resilience: The president highlighted the need to aggressively advance efforts toward long-term food security and develop resilient energy systems. He pointed to Guyana’s growing food production capacity and emerging energy resources, pledging Guyana’s commitment to support regional initiatives in these areas.
    • Overcoming Shared Vulnerabilities: President Ali called for collective action to address shared vulnerabilities, such as climate change, transnational crime, and economic shocks. He described CARICOM as the region’s “collective shield and moral compass,” capable of guiding member states through challenging times.
    • Preserving the Region as a Zone of Peace: Emphasizing the importance of peace and stability, President Ali reaffirmed Guyana’s support for mechanisms that promote democratic governance and protect the sovereignty of small states.
    • Guyana’s Leadership Role: Guyana stands ready to contribute meaningfully to regional food security and energy diversification, positioning itself as a leader in driving the regional agenda.

    The Broader Vision

President Ali’s message was delivered as regional leaders gathered in Kingston for the 49th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM. Key issues on the agenda included regional trade, energy cooperation, food systems transformation, climate resilience, and advancing the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

He also called for deeper collaboration in areas such as climate change adaptation, regional security, and diplomacy, urging CARICOM to act as a united front in global affairs.

    The Way Forward

President Ali’s remarks underscore the critical need for CARICOM nations to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive, collective action. By strengthening trade, ensuring food and energy security, and deepening collaboration, the region can unlock its full potential and build a more resilient, prosperous future for all its people.
