Unite to Defend Our Sovereignty Against External Threats

    Published on

As we approach an election year, it is crucial for every Guyanese of voting age, who is properly registered, to participate in the electoral process and select the political party they believe should govern our nation. However, we must remain vigilant about the external threats our country faces during this time.

Currently, none of the major political parties, nor the smaller ones, have unveiled their manifestos outlining their governance policies. Yet, the political atmosphere is already charged with criticism as parties in opposition swiftly point fingers at the government’s performance, highlighting failures to fulfill electoral promises. This competitive struggle for power, while a normal aspect of democracy, tends to be divisive. It is expected to unfold according to the rule of law and the constitutional regulations governing the Regional and General Elections.

During elections, our nation becomes particularly susceptible to external threats. This is especially relevant for Guyana today. As we enter this election year, it is imperative that we recognize the ongoing external threats to our security and remain united against them, even as we express our differing preferences for political leadership.

A recent report from Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional highlighted the Venezuelan government’s intentions regarding the Essequibo region, referring to it as an area of “the highest strategic importance.” They plan to elect a governor for Guayana Esequiba during their regional elections on April 27. Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela’s Minister of Interior and Justice, emphasized the significance of this territory, indicating Maduro’s regime’s intentions have not waned.

Additionally, an unsettling incident occurred during an International Business Conference in Paramaribo, Suriname, where a Surinamese minister presented a map depicting the New River Triangle as part of Suriname. This presentation was met with silence from the Guyanese present, which prompted a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reaffirming that the New River Triangle is undeniably part of Guyana’s sovereign territory, as established by historical agreements.

Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud urged all Guyanese, particularly those in leadership roles, to have a clear understanding of our territorial limitations. It is encouraging to see organizations like the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association, and the Private Sector Commission vocally condemn this incident as an affront to our sovereignty. The Private Sector Commission expressed deep concern over the lack of protest from those present and called for an apology from Mr. Vishnu Doerga for allowing this situation to unfold.

In closing, the central message of this letter is clear: as a nation, particularly in a politically charged election year, we must rise above our internal divisions. It is essential that we unite against any external threats to our sovereignty, presenting a collective voice in defense of our national integrity.
