Prison Service Welcomes 26 New Ranks as Reform Efforts Continue

    Published on

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has welcomed 26 new prison officers into its ranks, marking another significant step in the ongoing reform and modernization of the country’s corrections system. The new recruits were officially inducted during a ceremony themed “Changing Mindset and Culture for Corrections 2025,†underscoring the GPS’s commitment to transforming both the operational and cultural landscape of its institutions.

The addition of these officers comes at a pivotal time, as the government continues to invest heavily in the prison system. Recent years have seen substantial infrastructural upgrades at key facilities, including the Lusignan, Mazaruni, and New Amsterdam prisons. These upgrades have introduced modern amenities such as vocational schools, trade shops, and improved living quarters for both inmates and staff.

Training remains a cornerstone of the GPS’s reform agenda. Each new officer undergoes a rigorous Basic Recruit Training Course, designed to equip them with the skills necessary for effective inmate management, emergency response, and the upholding of basic human rights. This year, the government has allocated significant resources to further enhance training, with hundreds of officers slated to receive advanced instruction in prison management techniques.

The reforms are not limited to staff development. Over 1,600 inmates are expected to benefit from academic, technical, and vocational training programs aimed at preparing them for successful reintegration into society. The ultimate goal is to reduce recidivism and improve the overall function of the prison system.

The introduction of new ranks is a clear signal of the GPS’s resolve to build a more professional, humane, and effective corrections service. As reform efforts continue, the focus remains on creating safer environments for both staff and inmates, while fostering opportunities for rehabilitation and personal growth.
