President Dr. Irfaan Ali has voiced his disappointment with the performance of contractors involved in the construction of the new Demerara River Bridge and its approach road. The project, a critical component of Guyana’s infrastructure development, has faced several challenges, including delays and issues with the quality of work.
The new Demerara River Bridge, valued at US$260 million, is being constructed by a consortium led by China Railway and Construction Corporation Limited (CRCCL). Despite initial optimism about its completion by the end of 2024, the project timeline has been extended to August 2025 to ensure that concrete works are properly cured.
President Ali’s concerns also extend to the approach road, which is part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity and facilitate economic growth. The government has awarded significant contracts for the construction of a new four-lane road connecting the bridge to the East Bank of Demerara, with a total value of over $7.3 billion.
The President’s dissatisfaction highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that major infrastructure projects meet high standards and are completed on schedule. As Guyana continues to invest heavily in its transportation infrastructure, there is a growing emphasis on accountability and efficiency among contractors.
The new bridge and its associated infrastructure are expected to significantly improve travel times and enhance economic opportunities in Regions Three and Four. However, the challenges faced by this project underscore the complexities of large-scale construction endeavors and the need for robust oversight to ensure successful outcomes.
