Emphasizing the critical role of free and fair elections in maintaining the nation’s democracy, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, urged the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to remain alert to any efforts that could disrupt the upcoming elections scheduled for later this year. “Although we do not foresee any unrest or actions that would violate the rule of law, it is essential that we stay vigilant against any threats to our internal order. The Defence Force must be prepared to act, if necessary, to uphold stability and safeguard the democratic process,†he stated during the opening of the GDF’s Annual Officers Conference this morning.
The President underscored that elections are a cornerstone of Guyana’s democracy and that all measures should be taken to ensure they occur in an atmosphere devoid of intimidation, violence, and interruptions. “Our commitment is to the nation, its security, and the maintenance of law and order, rather than to any political faction. The foundation of Guyana’s democracy relies on free, fair, and peaceful elections, and we will not permit any internal or external force to undermine the will of the people,†he asserted.
Moreover, President Ali made it clear that while the Defence Force is expected to act with professionalism to maintain peace during the elections, its members are entitled to their own political preferences. “To clarify, we do not require anyone to adopt a partisan approach. We ask every member of the Joint Services to uphold a professional and national perspective. Each individual in the Force has the right to vote according to their conscience, and as long as I serve as Commander-in-Chief, that right will be honored. The professionalism of the military will always be upheld,†he concluded.
