President Dr. Irfaan Ali delivered a rousing send-off to Guyana’s largest-ever CARIFTA Games contingent, expressing deep pride and unwavering national support as the 42-member team departs for Trinidad and Tobago’s 2025 CARIFTA Track and Field Championships.

During a special ceremony at State House, President Ali commended the athletes for their dedication, discipline, and resilience, highlighting their journey as a source of inspiration for the entire nation. He assured the team that all of Guyana stands firmly behind them, confident that they will represent the country with distinction both on and off the field.

“This is not just about medals or podium finishes,†President Ali told the athletes. “You are ambassadors of Guyana. Your hard work, sportsmanship, and unity reflect the spirit of our nation. We are proud of you, and we wish you every success.â€

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) confirmed that this year’s squad is the largest Guyana has fielded in more than three decades. The team, which includes 15 returning athletes from last year’s successful campaign in Grenada, is a blend of seasoned competitors and promising newcomers. Notable names include Malachi Austin, Tianna Springer, and Athaleya Hinckson—athletes who are expected to be strong medal contenders after their impressive performances in previous regional meets.

The athletes’ preparation has been rigorous, with two intensive training camps designed to hone their skills, build team cohesion, and ensure peak performance for the April 19–21 championships at Hasely Crawford Stadium. The government, National Sports Commission, Guyana Olympic Association, and a host of private sponsors have all contributed to the team’s logistics, outfitting, and readiness.

In a show of national unity, President Ali called on all Guyanese to rally behind the team, emphasizing the importance of collective support in motivating the athletes to excel. He also highlighted the broader significance of sports in fostering youth development, national pride, and international recognition for Guyana.

As the team heads to Trinidad, the nation’s hopes are high—not just for medals, but for the continued growth of athletics and the positive example these young competitors set for future generations.
