President Dr. Irfaan Ali delivered an impassioned send-off to Guyana’s national track and field team on Wednesday, urging the entire country to rally behind the 42 young athletes as they departed for the 2025 CARIFTA Games in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
Addressing the athletes and officials at his Shiv Chanderpaul Drive office, President Ali praised the team’s dedication and underscored the significance of their role as national ambassadors. “You are not just carrying your own dreams—you’re carrying the hopes of a nation. We are all behind you, cheering for you every step of the way,” he told the delegation.
The 42-member squad, accompanied by 10 officials, represents the largest contingent Guyana has sent to the CARIFTA Games in over three decades. Among the standout athletes are Tianna Springer, Kaidon Persaud, Attoya Harvey, and Malachi Austin. The full team features a blend of experienced competitors and promising newcomers, reflecting the depth of talent fostered through recent government and private sector investment in youth sports.
Also present at the send-off were Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson and Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, both of whom encouraged the athletes to compete with pride and unity. The team’s participation in this prestigious regional championship is seen as a testament to Guyana’s growing commitment to nurturing athletic excellence and providing young people with opportunities to shine on the international stage.
The 2025 CARIFTA Games are scheduled for April 18–21 at Trinidad’s Hasely Crawford Stadium, where Guyana’s athletes will compete against the Caribbean’s best. Their journey follows two intensive training camps and significant logistical support from the Athletics Association of Guyana, the government, and sponsors.
